When should I apply for an Observership?

It is suggested that International Medical Graduates plan on applying for an observerships prior to participating in any type of residency or clerkship in the US or taking the USMLE Step 2 CS. This allows you to Observe the methods of US clinical care, practice Medical English, and become familiar with the cultures of the American Medical Society. The experience and certificates will help you get the residency and/or clerkship you desire.

Certifications

You will be required to obtain a HIPPA and Bloodborne Pathogens Certificate and offered CPR, First Aid, ACLS, BLS, and PALs Certifications*.

A Letter of

Recommendation

After completing your Observership. You will receive a letter of recommendation from your overseeing Physician.

Observing

& Lectures

Our physicians have pledged to provide you with four weeks of Observing Patient Care. We also provide weekly lectures on important topics.


Program Outline

  1. Each Observership begins with a two (2) day Orientation:
    • which defines Observer rules and Physician's goals
    • which lead to HIPPA and Bloodborne Pathogens Certification
  2. On the first day of your Observership, a staff member will escort you to the Physician's office and introduce you to the Physician and his/her staff.
  3. Each Physician has a signed contract pledging to provide each Observer with a minimum of 4 weeks of observing patient care in a Health Care Setting for the specific purpose of gaining medical knowledge. Each Observership can be renewed twice for a maximum of three (3) months.
  4. Each week, we host lectures covering important topics such as:
    • Private Health Insurance (ie, PPO, HMO, POS, Health Savings Accounts, etc.)
    • State-Funded Health Insurance (Medicaid) and Federally-Funded Health Insurance for Retirement Age (Medicare)
    • Patient Note Documentation
    • Physician/Patient Communication
    • Licensure requirements of each State in the US
    • CPR & First Aid Certification*
    • ACLS, BLS, and PALs Certificates*
    • Spoken English Proficiency tutoring* (if needed)
  5. Transportation and Housing Assistance is provided
    • Complimentary airport pick-up and drop-off
    • Assistance with finding housing prior to your arrival
  6. Letters of Recommendation (LORs): You will, if eligible, receive a Letter of Recommendation upon successful completion of your observership.
    • LOR from Physician you observed with
    • LOR from staff Physician
  7. Weekly Monitoring and Evaluation: Our staff will communicate with the Observer and the Physician each week to make sure the goals of the Observership are being met. Physicians will evaluate the Observer's ability and progress in areas such as:
    • Spoken English Proficiency
    • Writing Patient Notes
    • Writing Physician's Orders
  8. Opportunity to earn the following addition Certificates*:
    • Certificate of completion
    • CPR & First Aid
    • ACLS
    • BLS
    • PALS
